Personnel from the Naval Security Station (NSS) 023 stationed along the Cawthorne Channel in Rivers State have executed a daring rescue operation, saving the lives of more than 250 passengers aboard a capsized boat. The incident occurred around 10pm local time on April 28, 2024.
According to a statement released by the Director of Naval Information, Commodore A ADAMS-ALIU, the ill-fated vessel, MV PRECIOUS EMMANUEL, departed from a local market in Sangana area of Bayelsa State bound for Rivers State. Tragically, it encountered stormy waters, striking a wreck that caused it to overturn. The vessel, a locally-made 3-deck wooden boat known as a “Large Cotonou Boat”, lacked essential lifesaving equipment, and none of its passengers were wearing lifejackets.
Thanks to the swift and professional response of Nigerian Navy personnel, no lives were lost. This rescue mission reflects the strategic directive of Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, emphasizing the importance of a safe and secure maritime environment in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea.
