Youths from the Nkpologu community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State have raised concerns over the alleged misappropriation of a N20 million government grant intended for electricity provision in their town. The funds were originally released during the administration of former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
The youths have accused their traditional ruler, Simeon Idu, and other community leaders of mismanaging the money, which was meant to improve the community’s electricity infrastructure. Despite repeated appeals for the project to be completed, the funds have allegedly been diverted, leaving the town without the promised electricity.
Attempts by the community to address the issue through government and police channels have reportedly been thwarted, with allegations that certain government officials have colluded to block their efforts. The youths claim that the accused parties have even resorted to threats of imprisonment to silence them.
In a new twist, the controversy has resurfaced amid discussions about the potential appointment of a community member as the local government chairman. The youths believe that the same individuals involved in the misappropriation of the electricity funds are now attempting to use this opportunity to suppress their calls for accountability.
Despite their grievances, the youths reaffirm their support for the current administration of Governor Peter Mbah, expressing confidence in his ability to address the matter and deliver justice for their community. They have called on the governor to investigate the situation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
