The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has accredited Vanguard Media Limited – Publishers of Vanguard Newspapers – and 113 other media organizations for the full coverage of the September 21 Governorship Election in Edo state.
The development came on a day the commission also opened its special Media Accreditation Portal for the November 16 Governorship Election in Ondo state.
INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun who disclosed these in two separate statements issued Monday in Abuja, said those accredited for the Edo election were those who submitted their applications and uploaded the personal details of their personnel ahead of the deadline of Thursday, 5th September 2024.
“The Commission is pleased to announce that after verification, 114 newspaper, radio, television and online media organizations have successfully uploaded the details of 721 personnel to cover the election as reporters, cameramen, engineers for live broadcast and support staff. The full list, including the number of personnel to be deployed, has been uploaded to our website and social media platforms for public information.
“The Commission wishes to reassure all accredited media organizations, observers and political party agents that their accreditation tags will be ready ahead of the election”, he stated.
While assuring all accredited groups of unimpeded lawful access to voting and collation locations, Olumekun appealed to media organizations and observers to abide by their codes of professional ethics, the law and the Commission’s regulations and guidelines in their reportage and observation of processes and procedures before, during and after the election.
On the coverage of Ondo election, INEC said its dedicated portal for online accreditation of journalists and media organizations wishing to cover the November 16 election will opened on Monday 9th September 2024 and will automatically shut down at 12 midnight on Thursday, 31st October 2024.
“Interested media organizations wishing to deploy journalists and technical staff to cover the election are by this notice required to apply via https://imap.inecnigeria.org
“We implore prospective applicants to do the needful well ahead of the 31st October deadline. There will be no deadline extension, while late submission will not be entertained”, Olumekun added.
