Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has emphasized mentoring as the most powerful and enduring form of legacy in academia. He made this statement at the valedictory programme for Professor Abimbola Yisau Sangodoyin, a renowned scholar and Professor of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Ibadan, held on Thursday.
Hamzat celebrated Sangodoyin’s retirement and 70th birthday, describing him as an influential personality who has modelled and mentored engineering students and professionals for over four decades. He noted that Sangodoyin’s approach to mentorship has allowed students to develop independent ideas while maintaining academic standards.
The Deputy Governor highlighted the importance of mentoring, saying it fosters trust, open communication, and goal achievement, and is essential for personal and professional growth. He added that Sangodoyin’s legacy extends beyond his publications and academic programs to the countless lives he has shaped and inspired.
Other dignitaries, including the Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. O.A. Bamiro, also praised Sangodoyin’s contributions to academia and mentorship.
In his response, Sangodoyin urged lecturers to impact lives and mentor the young generation, saying the support and mentorship he received helped him excel academically and contribute to the university.
