The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State on 26 April 2026. Following the Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu’s directive, all officers linked to the incident were withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters, Abuja, for expedited disciplinary proceedings.
The Force Disciplinary Committee found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and regulations governing the use of firearms. His actions were deemed unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the oath to protect life. The FDC recommended immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other culpable officers, which the IGP has approved and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification. Upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over for prosecution for their roles in the extrajudicial shooting.
IGP Disu reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and abuse of power, stressing that no uniform confers the right to take life outside the law. He extended condolences to Mr Ogidi’s family, assuring them that justice will be served and seen to be served to reinforce public confidence and accountability. The Force urged the public to remain calm, reaffirming its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and protection of citizens’ rights.
