The Delta State Police Command has arraigned three persons over the alleged torture of a resident in Emevor Community, Isoko North LGA, following a viral video that sparked public outrage. Police said the incident happened on 5 July 2026 at about 8:15 a.m., when the suspects, alongside others still at large, unlawfully arrested the victim and took him to a hotel in Emevor. There, he was allegedly assaulted, humiliated, inflicted with bodily injuries, and threatened with death.
Acting on the Commissioner’s directive, the Ozoro Area Command launched a discreet investigation after the video went viral and human rights groups submitted a petition. The probe led to the arrest of Lucky Okeremu, 48, Chairman of Emevor Community; Okiemute Oyibo, 46; and Karo Akamakusi, 45. They have been charged before a competent court with conspiracy to commit felony, assault occasioning harm, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, and threatening the victim’s life under Sections 516, 355, 249(e), and 86 of the Criminal Code Law of Delta State, 2006. The Command said efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects.
Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, stated that while vigilante groups and community leaders support security efforts, they have no power to mete out punishment. “Anyone who takes the law into their own hands will be prosecuted,” he warned, urging vigilantes to hand over suspects to the police for lawful investigation and prosecution.
