Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has urged Nigerian managers and professionals to embrace innovation, uphold ethical leadership, and strengthen institutions to thrive amid rapid economic and technological change. Speaking on Thursday at the Nigerian Institute of Management’s 65th Anniversary Dinner and Awards Night at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, themed “Leading Through Transformation: The Human Element in Modern Leadership,” the Governor said failure to adapt will leave professionals behind. He was represented by Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.
Sanwo-Olu noted that both public and private sector organizations are facing disruptions from digital transformation, shifting global markets, and growing demands for accountability. He said today’s challenges — including rapid urbanization and the changing nature of work — require leaders who are strategic, ethical, innovative, and decisive. “Leadership in today’s world goes beyond technical competence. Integrity, adaptability and a commitment to continuous learning are now essential,” he said. The Governor added that strong institutions are critical for stability, trust and long-term development, and reaffirmed that Lagos’ agenda is focused on encouraging enterprise and building institutions that deliver results.
The event’s highlight was the investiture of Deputy Governor Hamzat as a Fellow of NIM. In his welcome address, NIM President/Chairman, Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (Rtd.), reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to management excellence, noting that its 2003 charter by the National Assembly mandates it to set standards and regulate management practice in Nigeria. Ayuba also paid tribute to past presidents for sustaining the Institute’s legacy. Concluding, Sanwo-Olu called on managers to embrace digital transformation and acquire global competitive skills as NIM marks 65 years of promoting professionalism and talent development in Nigeria.
