LAGOS — The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Olayiwola Fatai, has said sustainable security in the state depends on deliberate community involvement, not just the efforts of government and security agencies.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting hosted by Area ‘E’ Command of the Nigeria Police Force, CP Fatai acknowledged that government interventions and the commitment of security agencies have strengthened public safety across Lagos. However, he stressed that maintaining that progress requires residents to become active partners in the security architecture rather than passive beneficiaries. “A safer Lagos must be built through a conscious and collective effort, with residents playing their part in making their communities less vulnerable to crime and disorder,” he said.
Echoing the message, Chairman of Amuwo-Odofin LGA, Prince Lanre Sanusi, said security, safety and welfare are responsibilities that cut across the entire community. He noted that with evolving neighbourhoods and substantial demands on security agencies, the safest communities are those where residents see public safety as their own duty. From youths and traditional rulers to Community Development Associations and other local stakeholders, Sanusi said everyone has a role to play, and security works best when it becomes part of civic life.
