IBADAN — The Oyo State Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, will mark World Pharmacists Day 2026 with a week-long programme from September 19 to September 27, 2026, drawing government officials, healthcare leaders and industry stakeholders to Ibadan.
With the theme “Empowering Pharmacist for a Healthier Future,” the event is designed to showcase pharmacists’ role in strengthening public health, primary care, medication safety and innovation. Expected at the opening are Governor Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, First Lady Tamunominini Makinde as Special Guest of Honour, PSN National President Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, and keynote speaker Pharm. Lekan Asuni, MD/CEO of Lefas Pharmaceutical. Planning Committee Chairman Adebayo Olukayode Gbadamosi said the celebration will both honour professional achievements and push for deeper integration of pharmacists into health policy. Host, Pharm. (Col.) Victor Segun Ajanaku (rtd), FPSN, noted that building pharmacist competencies will improve how medicines are prescribed, dispensed and managed across Oyo State.
The programme will spotlight expanded roles for pharmacists in medication counselling, chronic disease support, vaccination, screening, pharmacovigilance and antimicrobial stewardship. Asuni called for sustainable funding and remuneration models to support these services, while guest speaker Mr. John Alamu of CapitalSage Holdings urged pharmacists to embrace continuous learning and digital health tools. Governor Makinde reaffirmed his administration’s support, describing pharmacists as key custodians of medicines and drug safety. Activities across designated venues in the state will culminate in a red-carpet Awards Night on September 27, chaired by Engr. O. O. Oyetade, with contributions from Pharm. Rahamon Jimoh Bioku.
