PLATEAU — Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has proposed a dedicated Orange Economy Security and Intellectual Property Coordination Desk within the Nigeria Police Force to combat piracy and other crimes threatening Nigeria’s creative sector.
Disu made the proposal on Tuesday, September 16, 2026, while lecturing participants of Senior Executive Course 48, 2026, at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, on “The Orange Economy and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development in Nigeria: The Role of the Nigeria Police Force.” He noted that industries like film, music, fashion, publishing, advertising, gaming and tourism are increasingly driven by IP and technology and need stronger security to thrive, create jobs and attract investment.
The proposed desk, he said, would provide specialised policing, dedicated reporting mechanisms and improved stakeholder engagement, while supporting intelligence-led operations against organised piracy, counterfeiting and cyber fraud. The IGP called for deeper collaboration with the Nigerian Copyright Commission, better protection of festivals, concerts and cultural sites, and robust cybercrime response and digital evidence preservation. He added that professional, accountable policing and creating lawful income pathways for young creatives are key to deterring crime and building investor confidence.
