Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has unveiled a six-point agenda to secure the 2027 general elections, warning that any polling unit where citizens feel unsafe has already failed.
Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Senior Police Officers Conference and Retreat (CARSPO) in Owerri, Imo State, themed “developing a Nigeria Police roadmap for effective management of election security,” Disu listed early intelligence gathering and mapping of flashpoints, training on crowd control and human rights, joint operations with INEC and other agencies, fast communication to tackle disinformation and fake results, public partnership, and strict neutrality as pillars of the roadmap.
He ordered a review of lessons from the recent Osun governorship election, directed CPs to publish official contact lines, warned officers against partisanship and harassment, and gave October 12 deadline for a final election-security taskforce and framework.
On operational gains since February, Disu said police arrested 1,643 suspects — 251 terrorists/bandits, 343 murder suspects, 566 armed robbers, 483 cultists — rescued 1,066 kidnap victims, and recovered 947 firearms and over 22,000 rounds of ammunition, stressing that the Force will not slow down on crime fighting because elections are coming.
The event at Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre was attended by the SGF representing President Tinubu, Governor Hope Uzodimma, Senate President’s representative, service chiefs and industry leaders.
