The Nigerian Navy has completed and commissioned a perimeter fence at Omolaiye Community Primary School in Ikorodu North, Lagos, in a move aimed at improving school security, protecting pupils and teachers and creating a safer environment for learning.
The project, delivered under the Chief of the Naval Staff Special Intervention Quick Impact Projects Scheme, highlights the Navy’s efforts to support community development through targeted infrastructure investments while strengthening its’ relationship with civilians.
Rear Admiral Kolawole Oguntuga, who represented the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass (Admiralty Medal), at the commissioning ceremony, said the intervention reflected the Navy’s commitment to improving living conditions and supporting socio-economic development across Nigerian communities.
He explained that the Special Intervention Quick Impact Projects Scheme was designed to address pressing community needs through initiatives that promote security, empowerment and improved quality of life. The newly constructed fence, he said, would help safeguard the school grounds, protect pupils and teachers and provide a more secure setting for teaching and learning.
Oguntuga commended the project facilitator, Rear Admiral Olukayode Ayo-Vaughn, for identifying the school’s security needs and using the intervention to deliver infrastructure with lasting benefits. He described the initiative as an example of leadership that translates institutional support into practical improvements in people’s lives.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Lagos State Government, the leadership of Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area, traditional rulers, community leaders, teachers, pupils and the project team, whose cooperation helped bring the initiative to completion.
The Navy, he added, remained committed to working with communities across the country to promote peace, security and stability. He urged residents and school authorities to protect and maintain the new facility to preserve its’ benefits for future generations.
Rear Admiral Ayo-Vaughn, who facilitated the project, emphasized the importance of community participation in delivering sustainable development initiatives.
In his welcome address, he thanked residents and stakeholders for their cooperation throughout the execution of the project. He particularly recognized the contributions of the secretary of Ikorodu North LCDA, the school’s head teacher, Mrs. Oyeneye, the Baale of Omolaiye, Alhaji Salawu Adeshina, the SMBC leader and other community representatives.
Ayo-Vaughn noted that their involvement had been instrumental in completing the project and reinforcing the relationship between the Nigerian Navy and the people it serves.
The ceremony also brought together senior naval officers and local government representatives, including Rear Admiral Kolawole Oguntuga, Director of Manning at Naval Headquarters; Rear Admiral Nnamdi Ekwom, Chief Staff Officer of the Western Naval Command; the Commandant of NNS Quorra; senior officials of Ikorodu North LCDA; and Alhaji Chief S.A. Balogun Agbaje.
For the Omolaiye community, the new perimeter fence represents a practical investment in the safety of a public school and the protection of its’ learning environment. By creating a clearer boundary around the school premises, the project is intended to strengthen access control and reduce exposure to potential security risks.
The Baale of Omolaiye, Alhaji Salawu Adeshina, welcomed the intervention and expressed appreciation to the Chief of the Naval Staff for directing the project to the community through Rear Admiral Ayo-Vaughn.
He pledged the community’s support for the protection and maintenance of the facility, describing it as a valuable addition to Omolaiye’s shared assets and a lasting contribution to the welfare of its’ residents.
