Ifeanyi Okowa, the vice presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has received accolades from former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
Okowa was named the new vice president of Nigeria by Jonathan, who hosted the governor of Delta State and some other PDP leaders.

Given that it’s a joint ticket, this is a significant statement of backing for PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Jonathan was quoted as saying, “Our incoming vice-president – he has served two tenures as a governor,” while holding Okowa’s hand at the meeting on Wednesday.

Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, also attended the meeting, as had been previously reported.

The conference is believed to be a part of preparations for Nigeria’s presidential election in 2023, which will choose President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor.

Jonathan expressed “more success” during the event to individuals running for various offices in the 2023 elections.

Concerns were raised by the party’s leadership and supporters due to the former president’s silence on PDP matters and activities.

However, Jonathan’s declaration, which is his first public stance supporting any presidential contender for the 2023 elections, will significantly increase the party’s confidence in the run-up to the elections next year.

Jonathan didn’t take part in any primary elections of any parties, despite calls for him to run for president in 2023 amid claims that he will leave the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
