The Federal Government honoured Rt. Hon. Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, and other outstanding Nigerians on Tuesday, October 11, 2022, in recognition of their patriotic contribution to our country.
Hon. Elumelu, who represents the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in Delta State, was presented with the Award of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by President Muhammadu Buhari, who carried out the investiture at the International Conference Center (ICC) Abuja, for his meritorious contributions in a number of areas of national development.
The National Honours Act of 2004 created National Honour and gives the President the authority to recognise and honour deserving Nigerian citizens for their remarkable contributions to the growth of our country’s aspirations and the welfare of humanity.

The opposition leader, who is renowned for his frank advocacy of good governance and the defence of human rights, received the National Honours, and this has continued to generate widespread praise and support from Nigerians both at home and abroad.
Along with countless other national and international honours, numerous traditional titles, and professional recognitions for his contributions to our country’s goals, Hon. Elumelu has received many other accolades, including the OON.
Since the beginning of our modern democratic era, Hon. Elumelu has worked tirelessly to establish the Rule of Law, good governance, accountability, and social justice in the polity. This is acknowledged and honoured by Nigerians, including his political adversaries.
A three-term member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Elumelu is a modest and committed politician. Prior to taking on the role of minority leader, he served as chairman of the power and health committees and as a member of the information, climate change, interior, water resources, science and technology, national security, and public safety house committees.
When he bravely supported substantial reforms that helped reorient the Sector as the Chairman of the House Committee on Power, he became well-known.
His bravery in leading a system-wide investigation into the Power Sector in 2009 contributed to the sector’s sanitization. It also supports his reputation as a statesman who prioritises the needs of the country over all other factors.
The Legal Framework for the Regulation, Development, and Management of the National Health System, which altered the industry for better healthcare services enjoyed by millions of Nigerians, was laid by Elumelu, Chairman of the Committee on Health, with the help of other leaders.
He continues to fight tenaciously for the rights of the Nigerian people in his capacity as minority leader, particularly in light of the important roles he played in the creation of laws and the design of policies that attempted to improve and empower the lives of the populace.
One of the most active sponsors of motions and measures that benefit people is Hon. Elumelu. Every week when the legislature is in session, he introduces a motion or a bill that directly affects the welfare and advancement of the populace.
In addition to his exceptional economic upliftment of Nigerians, which is demonstrated by his extensive empowerment programmes, human capital investments, and infrastructural achievements in his Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency of Delta State and in other States of the Federation.
In terms of constituency initiatives, the Minority Leader is reportedly one of the 9th Assembly’s most productive lawmakers. In addition to other development projects in his Federal Constituency and other constituencies even in other States of the Federation, he has to his credit initiatives including roads, schools, hospitals, agriculture, and power.
According to the information that is currently available, he has provided approximately 4000 Nigerians with chances for work and entrepreneurship through direct job placements and other initiatives.
Hon. Elumelu’s extensive education and personal discipline are undoubtedly the roots of his leadership ability. He has a Masters of Business Administration from Ambrose Ali University in Ekpoma, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the same university, a National Diploma in Accounting from Yaba College of Technology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Organizational Leadership from Oxford University, and a Diploma in Contemporary Public Administration and Management from Galilee International Management Institute.

In addition to having completed a Strategic Leadership Programme course at the University of Oxford, he also possesses the prestigious Leadership and Best Practice Certificate from Harvard Business School, Boston.
Without a doubt, the Hon. Ndudi Elumelu is a name to be respected in the current democratic system. It says a lot about his leadership abilities that he was able to successfully organise and coordinate the opposition in the House of Representatives.
