The Church of England barred Desmond Tutu’s daughter from officiating at funerals because of her sexual orientation.
It is understood that Mpho Tutu van Furth, an Anglican Priest in the Diocese of Washington, has been seeking permission to officiate at the funeral of her late-godfather, Martin Keyon, in Shropshire.
The Church of England, however, refused Mpho the opportunity to lead the funeral in honour of her late grandfather, citing her sexuality.
Ms. Tutu van Furth, speaking about the development, told BBC News that it appears “churlish and hurtful,” adding that it was a “difficult situation” for her.
Because its official teaching is that marriage is between one man and one woman, the Church of England does not allow its clergy to be in same-sex marriage.

The Episcopal Church, the sister Anglican church in the United States, allows the Diocese of Hereford and other priests to enter into gay marriages.

“Advice they give is in line with the House of Bishops’ current guidance on same-sex marriage,” the Diocese of Hereford said in a statement.
Former Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev Paul Bayes, who is a church campaigner to change the church’s position on sexuality, stated that “things are difficult and not good enough.”
“We urgently need to make space for the conscience, pastoral care, and love.”
