The Delta State Police Command has ordered the summary trial of two officers captured in a viral video collecting money from a motorist inside a police station using a POS machine.
The incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026, at ‘C’ Division Asaba, drew condemnation from the Command, which described the act as embarrassing, unprofessional, and conduct unbecoming of police officers. The Command said no citizen deserved to be treated in such a manner and called the officers’ actions inexcusable and unpardonable.
Commissioner of Police Yemi Oyeniyi said he aligns firmly with the directive of Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, which expressly prohibits extortion and the use of POS machines or any electronic payment platforms for transactions within police formations. He emphasized that no officer is authorized to demand or receive money from any member of the public under any guise.
An orderly room trial has commenced for the officers involved, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim. The outcome will be made public upon conclusion of the disciplinary process.
The CP reminded all officers that extortion and abuse of office will not be tolerated. He said officers are expected to carry out their duties professionally and treat members of the public with respect. He tasked officers to uphold the tenets of professional policing with respect to fundamental human rights of all citizens in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended. He added that actions taken against the erring officers will serve as a deterrent to others.
He appreciated members of the public for bringing the actions of the officers to the notice of the Command and encouraged continued reporting of police misconduct through the Complaint Response Unit on 09155570008 and 09011112311. He said the Delta State Police Command remains committed to discipline, accountability, and building public trust.
