The Forward Operating Base FORMOSO, Nigerian Navy, has arrested two wooden boats loaded with illegally mined black sand and 13 crew members on Bayelsa waterways. Acting on credible intelligence on 14 June 2026, Base Operations Officer Lt Cdr US Chukwu led operatives who intercepted the vessels at Lekeson and Liama Communities in Brass LGA. The boats were conveying bags of black sand suspected to have been mined illegally.
Commanding Officer Capt SK Haruna said the operation reflects FOB FORMOSO’s mandate to secure Nigeria’s waterways and stop illegal exploitation of natural resources. He reaffirmed the Base’s commitment to tackling maritime crimes and protecting the environment in line with the Navy’s constitutional duties.
The two boats, recovered black sand and all 13 suspects were handed over on 15 June 2026 to Nembe Division DPO, CSP Gbenekeme Kenneth, at Government Jetty Nembe. The handover followed Bayelsa State Government directive for further investigation and prosecution by the police.
