The President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, Mrs. Olufunmilola Disu, on Monday, 28 April 2026, flagged off the Lagos edition of the POWA CARES Initiative, describing it as a vision to build sustainable futures for police families across Nigeria. Addressing the Inspector General of Police, Lagos State officials, senior officers, nurses, and stakeholders, she said the programme recognizes that “the strength of any police force is anchored in the well-being of its families,” and moves beyond isolated welfare gestures to a structured, scalable framework for social protection.
Building on Phase One in Abuja where over 1,000 beneficiaries received eye care and medical support, the Lagos phase will deliver free eye screening and treatment to over 1,000 people, provide corrective eyewear, dental care, and medical consultations over two days. Beyond healthcare, the initiative extends to education through nursing scholarships, economic support with financial grants to 200 families, and daily mobility via Cowry card distribution. Selected families will also engage directly with the Inspector General of Police and the Governor of Lagos State to affirm their value and inclusion.
The programme further targets the next generation through sensitisation sessions on drug abuse, cultism, and sexual and reproductive health. Mrs. Disu commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and medical partners for their support, noting that collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, government institutions, and healthcare providers ensures the model can be replicated nationwide. “When we invest in families, we strengthen not just individuals, but institutions, and ultimately, the nation,” she said while declaring the Lagos phase open.
