Workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Kwara State Chapter have threaten to vote out politicians working against local government autonomy in the state.

The State chairman of the association , Oyinlade Adeleye-Seun who disclosed this during a press conference said local government autonomy should top the agenda of political office seekers going forward.

Local government is one of the layers of government structure in Nigeria, but more importantly, it is more closer to the people at the grassroots. However, despite the critical role of local government in governance, not much attention is given to this very important layer of government, a development that continue to worry members of the local government association in Kwara State.

The Union is therefore calling on Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to break his long silence on the vexed issue of local government autonomy and do the needful.

Reacting to the issue, the state commissioner for local government, chieftaincy affairs and community development, Lafia Kora-Sabi said the present administration is fully ready to support local government autonomy, maintaining that the state governor has nothing to do with the funds meant for the local government in the state.

Devolution of power to local people at the grass roots according to observers will help enhance legitimacy of government and its programmes.
