The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Adeniyi Illo for alleged conspiracy, impersonation and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. The arrest followed a petition dated July 28, 2026, submitted by the Association of African Traditional Religion Nigeria and Overseas through a letter from His Royal Majesty, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos. The petition was endorsed by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, CP Fatai Tijani.

Police sources said the petitioner alleged that Illo presented himself as the Olu of Ikeja after an open installation ceremony where he was reportedly adorned with a beaded crown and other royal regalia reserved for a crowned Yoruba king. The alleged installation was carried out without approval from the Lagos State Government, raising concerns about impersonation of the traditional ruler of Ikeja Kingdom and possible threats to public order. The case was handed to the General Investigation Section of SCID, Panti, under DCP Dayo Akinbisehin. After Illo allegedly failed to honour several invitations, detectives obtained a warrant and effected his arrest.

The suspect is currently in custody assisting investigators, and police say he will be charged to court at the conclusion of ongoing investigations. The Command stated that the case reflects SCID Panti’s efforts under CP Fatai Tijani and DCP Akinbisehin to proactively investigate allegations that could threaten public peace, using discreet, intelligence-led policing to resolve sensitive traditional and criminal disputes across Lagos before they escalate.
