The Lagos State Government plans to raise electricity supply from under 1,000MW to over 3,000MW by March 2027 to eliminate blackouts and drive a 24-hour economy.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this at the Africa Energy Conference 2026 at Lagos Business School, Lekki, noting the state will mobilise 2,000MW extra through national grid supply, independent power plants, energy hubs, power barges and embedded generation. Represented by his deputy, Dr. Kadri Hamzat, he said success hinges on upgrades across generation, transmission, distribution, gas and metering.

The governor listed a seven-point strategy including operationalising the Lagos Electricity Market, reinforcing transmission and distribution, expanding metering to curb estimated billing, securing gas supply, and deploying digital platforms like SCADA. He urged private investors to key into the plan, while Shell’s VP, Ronald Adams, called for sustained reforms to unlock Nigeria’s 37bn barrels oil and 250tcf gas reserves for power and industrialisation.
