The Ogun State Police Command has clarified a viral video and photos showing two men apprehended by residents in Kanuyi Community, Simawa, on June 1, 2026. Police said Simawa Division received a report at about 11:00 a.m. that two suspected criminals had been caught by the community. Operatives were mobilized, rescued the men from an agitated crowd, and took them into protective custody for identification and investigation.
Preliminary findings showed the individuals were serving officers attached to a Police Mobile Force Squadron in Lagos State. The Command said the officers had lost their way while returning from an official duty post in Sagamu and were mistaken for kidnappers. Their identities were verified through police ID cards, deployment documents, uniforms, and confirmation from their parent formation. Before police arrived, residents had searched, photographed, and recorded the officers, leading to misleading content circulating online. The officers escaped physical harm but endured public suspicion and emotional trauma.
The Command commended residents’ vigilance but urged the public to avoid mob action and allow security agencies to verify facts before conclusions or sharing unverified information. It said the incident highlights the sacrifices of security personnel and the need for cooperation to prevent misinformation and protect innocent persons.
