In a renewed push to tackle persistent traffic congestion, the Ota Area Command of the Ogun State Police Command, on day two, has begun clearing illegal shanties and makeshift structures along key road corridors, particularly around the busy Akute Under Bridge axis.
The early morning operation, which started as early as 4 a.m. on Tuesday, targeted roadside stalls and temporary buildings identified as major contributors to the chronic gridlock in the area. Authorities say the structures not only obstruct traffic flow but also pose safety risks to both motorists and pedestrians.
Police officials noted that many of the makeshift structures had encroached significantly onto the roadway, reducing available driving space and increasing the likelihood of accidents. In addition, the bridge has been dislodged today and the areas have reportedly served as hideouts for miscreants and hoodlums who have built houses under the uncompleted bridge. They were multiplying their numbers by giving birth and thus raising broader security concerns.
The enforcement exercise is part of the Ogun State Police Command’s ongoing “Operation No Traffic Gridlock,” an initiative introduced by the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, to restore order on major roads across the state.
Leading the operation was the Area Commander of Ota, ACP Shola Oladele, alongside Divisional Police Officer Ajuwon Division and tactical teams from the State Police Headquarters, Abeokuta. Also on the mission was the Ifo Local Government chairman.
ACP Oladele said the effort is not just about easing traffic but also about improving public safety and urban order.
The clearance exercise is ongoing and will be sustained to ensure compliance and prevent a return of illegal structures.
