Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for renewed collective action to build a food-secure Lagos where food is accessible, safe, nutritious and affordable.

The Governor made the call at the grand finale of the 2026 World Food Day celebration themed “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow,” held Friday at the Nigeria Police College, GRA Ikeja. Represented by his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu noted that as Nigeria’s smallest state by landmass with over 22 million residents, food security remains a top priority requiring maximised land use, inter-state partnerships, increased local processing and efficient distribution to cut post-harvest losses.

He said his administration’s Five-Year Agricultural and Food Systems Roadmap targets raising food self-sufficiency from 20% to 40%, anchored on a three-tier structure comprising the Central Food Security Systems and Logistics Hub, Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hubs and last-mile retail networks to cut intermediaries and waste. According to him, the Central Hub at Ketu-Ereyun, Epe is at advanced stage, while mid-level hubs have been commissioned at Abijo, Ibeju-Lekki and Dairy Farm, Agege, with construction ongoing at Opebi and Bombata. The Produce for Lagos initiative, supported by a N500 billion Guarantee Offtake Fund, is linking farmers to structured offtake at agreed prices.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Abisola Olusanya, said government has strengthened production, processing and logistics through initiatives like Eko Logistics and Produce for Lagos, calling for sustained collaboration. Special Adviser Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola stressed food security is vital to national stability and urged residents to patronise local farmers to curb food inflation.
