Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has charged parents to instill proper values and sound upbringing in their children, stressing that raising responsible individuals is key to upholding family legacies and ensuring parents are remembered for good after death. Speaking at the 10th Year Remembrance and prayer for late Chief Rafiu Bakare Jafojo, Lagos’ first civilian Deputy Governor from 1979 to 1983, held at Ikeja Central Mosque on Friday, the Governor reflected on the late statesman’s contributions to governance and development.
Represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu said Jafojo’s generation raised children to “do what is right for positive remembrance of their parents,” and questioned how today’s parents are raising theirs. He urged citizens to uphold integrity and dedicate themselves to the nation’s greater good rather than personal gain, emulating the selfless service of earlier leaders. Sanwo-Olu described simplicity as Jafojo’s defining trait, noting that leaders of that era prioritized service, humility, and youth development over personal interests.
In his sermon, Chief Imam of Ikeja Central Mosque, Alhaji Khamorudeen Ilo, admonished believers to cultivate the fear of Allah and reflect devotion in daily life. He urged adherents to promote positivity in their communities, warning that negative utterances count as sin before Allah and hinder societal development. The Imam called on residents to “always speak positively of your environment, community, and governance” to foster progress.
