The leadership of the Nigerian Senate has held a closed door meeting with Heads of ​ Security agencies over the worsening trend of insecurity in Nigeria.

The meeting, chaired by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan was attended by other principal officers of the Senate and chairmen of security related committees.

In attendance were the Chief of Defence Staff , the Inspector General of Police , the comptroller general of the Civil Defence, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency and the Director General of the Department of State Service.

In his opening remarks before the closed-door meeting, the Senate​ President​ declared that Nigeria is at a crossroads and its very existence is under threat, owing to the growing insecurity in the country.

The Senate​ President​ told security chiefs that the level of insecurity was frightening.

Lawan who attributed the low national revenue ​ to crude oil theft and dwindling revenue are key areas of concern to Nigerians, said that the expectation is to begin to see drastic, immediate improvement in the security situation.

On his part, the Chief of Defence Staff,​ Major-General​ Lucky Irabor who noted that issues of National Security must be seen from a collective perspective, said that ​ a lot has happened and more was being done to improve the security situation of the country.

 

The meeting was at the instance of the Senate leadership in view of the more worrisome dimension, security challenges have turned​ and​ with a view to coming up with practicable solutions.​
