The West African Examinations Council has assured candidates, parents, and schools that the ongoing 2026 WASSCE for school candidates will continue without disruption despite a protest by some workers. In a statement on 13 May 2026, WAEC said measures are in place to keep the examination process seamless nationwide, and that the exercise has run without interruption since it began. The Council stressed it respects workers’ right to protest but has taken steps to protect the integrity and smooth conduct of the exams.
WAEC explained that adjustments to the timetable followed a reduction in subjects from 76 to 38, which shortened the examination period to match the new structure and hybrid mode of conduct. It also dismissed claims of unfair dismissals and disciplinary actions, saying all staff matters are handled according to the staff handbook and statutory rules. On the use of contract Examination Officers and Assistant Examination Officers, WAEC said the move was to manage growing workloads and ensure smooth operations across West Africa.
The Council urged the public to ignore rumours and rely only on its verified channels for updates, adding that contingency plans are in place to keep the timetable intact. WAEC reaffirmed its commitment to credible assessment and thanked stakeholders for their trust over the past 74 years, promising to maintain high standards in public examinations.
