The Federal High Court’s decision to recognize Bashir Machina as the APC candidate for the Yobe North Senatorial District in the 2023 elections has been appealed by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released on Thursday, Senate President Ahmed Lawan said he had accepted the verdict and chosen not to appeal it after consulting with his political allies, backers, and well-wishers.
APC Chairman in Yobe State, Mr. Mohammed Gadaka, announced the party would appeal the verdict less than 24 hours after Lawan declared he wouldn’t.

Gadaka stated in a statement released on Friday that Lawan was the legitimate APC candidate for the Yobe North Senatorial District election, as acknowledged by the National Working Committee, which is led by Sen. Abdullahi Adamu (NWC) of the APC.

He said: “We are aware of the Wednesday, September 28, 2022, ruling of the Federal High Court in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, with respect to the forthcoming Yobe North Senatorial District election.

“However, we respectfully reject the decision of the President of the Senate, His Excellency Senator Ahmad Lawan, accepting the judgment of the court which disqualified his candidature and participation in the election.
“In the interest of Yobe State, Nigeria, and good government, the Yobe State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has chosen to appeal the Federal High Court verdict.”

Gadaka asserted that the party had a responsibility to safeguard and uphold Lawan’s 23 years of admirable service as a lawmaker, as well as his unblemished record of leadership, patriotism, and dedication to the success of Nigeria.
