The Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has stepped up its crackdown on unsafe transport practices, launching an intensified Total War on Overloading operation across the state. The campaign, which has already begun yielding results, is aimed at reducing road crashes and protecting commuters from the dangers associated with excessive loading of vehicles.
In a statement released by the Sector Public Education Officer, RC Oluwadamilola Jayeola, on behalf of the Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde G. Hamzat, the FRSC noted that the operation was coordinated by Deputy Corps Commander of Operations, DCC Lucas Dare Oguntade, and specifically targeted the menace of vehicles carrying human passengers alongside goods. The corps emphasized that such practices will no longer be tolerated, as they endanger lives and undermine national road safety efforts.
The enforcement drive was further bolstered by the support of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), whose Lagos State Commandant, Mr. Adedotun Keshinro, deployed officers to provide security backup for the exercise.
According to data released by the FRSC, arrests recorded during the intervention include:
Overloading (OVL): 10
Projected Load (PLE): 02
Light Sign Violation (LSV): 01
Route Violation (RTC): 01
Dangerous Driving (DGD): 01
FRSC operatives compelled offenders to immediately offload excess passengers and goods before fines were processed, underscoring the corps’ commitment to strict enforcement rather than mere revenue collection.
Sector Commander Hamzat praised the cooperation of stakeholders and commuters who commended the exercise, noting that public support is vital to sustaining safer roads. He urged Lagosians to not only obey road safety laws but also to report violators, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility.
The FRSC reaffirmed its resolve to continue rolling out strategic interventions, ensuring highways in Lagos and beyond remain safer, freer and crash-free.
