The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through Education District VI, partnered with POCACOV, NDLEA Zone 8 Command, and NSCDC Oshodi Division on Thursday, 11 June 2026, to hold a District-Wide Parents’ Sensitization Forum themed “Instilling Values, Preventing Vices: The Parents’ Role in Raising Responsible Children.” The event brought together parents, educators, school leaders, and security stakeholders to address cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, and other social vices threatening young people. Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary Mrs. Mojisola Christiana Yusuff said the family remains the first institution for nurturing responsible citizens and called for continuous parent engagement to build a morally sound society.
Speakers stressed deliberate parenting as Nigeria’s youth population grows. POCACOV Lagos Coordinator SP Olivia Ugochukwu noted that young people make up a large share of the nation’s demographics, placing responsibility on parents to instill values and discipline. Lagos Police Gender Unit’s CSP Omolola Odutola, representing ACP Oluwatoyin Kazeem, urged parents to lead by example since children learn more from observed behavior than lectures. NDLEA’s Commander Agoma Arinola Abosede presented on drug abuse prevention, covering early warning signs, peer pressure, and parental monitoring. NSCDC’s Superintendent Inegbese Eromosele spoke on school safety and emergency preparedness, emphasizing protection of infrastructure and community security collaboration.
NUT Lagos Chairman Comrade Akintoye Hassan used proverbs to remind parents that moral upbringing must match academic excellence, while ANCOPSS South-West President Comrade Olusola Masheyi commended Mrs. Yusuff’s proactive leadership on school safety and pledged principals’ support for safe learning environments. Organizers agreed that safeguarding children requires joint responsibility from families, schools, communities, and agencies. They reaffirmed commitment to sustained sensitization and collaborations to empower parents, strengthen family values, and create safer spaces for children and youths to thrive.
