LAGOS — Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has called on residents to make environmental sanitation a collective duty, saying a cleaner environment is essential for a healthy, sustainable and livable Lagos. Speaking on Saturday during the Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise in Festac, Amuwo-Odofin, Hamzat said the exercise was designed to engage communities and build a culture of responsibility.
“We cannot be a people without a healthy environment. A cleaner environment is what makes a city or a state sustainable,” he said. Hamzat disclosed that government is strengthening waste evacuation with 220 additional trucks to support Private Sector Participation, PSP, operators, and urged residents to patronize approved PSPs instead of cart pushers. He warned that unregulated collectors often dump refuse in canals and unauthorized areas, contributing to flooding. “The PSP will take it to the landfills. The cart pusher we don’t know,” he added.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, said the state is transitioning to a system where waste can be converted into useful resources as part of broader sustainability efforts. Amuwo-Odofin LG Chairman, Prince Lanre Sanusi, also urged residents to embrace the monthly exercise, noting growing consciousness around cleanliness. “A healthy environment is a healthy people. It’s for yourself. Let’s keep our environment clean,” he said.
