LAGOS — The Nigeria Police Force says the redevelopment of police barracks across Lagos is gaining momentum, with 21 projects at various stages of construction and rehabilitation. Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, disclosed this during an inspection tour of barracks and facilities in the state, where he assessed ongoing housing, rehabilitation and infrastructure works. He described decent accommodation as central to police welfare, saying living conditions directly affect officers’ morale and service delivery.
About 600 buildings within the barracks have already been refurbished and a headcount of personnel in quarters has been completed to determine actual housing needs and improve facility management. The tour also covered the Police Hospital in Falomo, which is undergoing renovation to strengthen medical services for officers and their families. Officials said the redevelopment includes clearing shanties and informal structures around the estates to restore order and create space for planned housing and supporting infrastructure. The IGP urged officers and their families to remain patient, noting that large-scale work comes with disruption.
The Lagos State Government is partnering with the police under the LagosHOMS housing framework, with private developers expected to play a key role. Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, said the goal is to provide better living conditions for police personnel while unlocking the development potential of existing estates. She acknowledged challenges around relocation, demolition and land reclamation, but said work has continued. According to her, full-scale development is now underway and at least 1,000 housing units are expected to be ready by February 2027.
