ABAKALIKI — The Ebonyi State Police Command has recorded two major breakthroughs after rescuing an abducted Methodist cleric in Ohaukwu LGA and recovering a locally made pistol during a raid in Abakaliki.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, Rev. Ede Sunday was abducted on September 9 in front of the Methodist Church, Ndulo Amofia, by two armed men who double-crossed his vehicle and escaped with him on a motorcycle. The case was reported at about 11:55 p.m., prompting immediate mobilisation by police operatives. As officers closed in during the pursuit, the abductors abandoned the cleric, who was later found and rescued at St. James Secondary School, Amofia. His vehicle was also recovered and he has since been reunited with his family, while efforts continue to arrest the fleeing suspects.
In a separate operation in Abakaliki, police disrupted a suspected cult meeting around a bakery in Kpirikpiri, Mile 50. The suspects fled on sighting the operatives, leaving behind a bag that contained a locally made Beretta pistol loaded with one round of 9mm ammunition and a mobile phone allegedly stolen from a robbery victim earlier that night. One suspect, Oshim Chisom, was arrested and is assisting with investigations. Commissioner of Police, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, commended the operatives for their swift response and reaffirmed the Command’s determination to prevent criminals from establishing safe havens. The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to aid crime prevention.
