When the federal high court in Abuja ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to pay N2 million in general damages to publishers and activists over the unlawful seizure of Omoyele Sowore’s phone in 2019, the issue took on a new dimension.
Sowore was detained on August 2, 2019, and his phones were confiscated by the DSS.
The DSS refused to release the activist despite being granted bail by two courts.
However, on December 24, 2019, he was finally released.
Sowore then filed a lawsuit against the secret service, demanding that the agency return his confiscated phones.

Justice Anwuli Chiekere, who delivered the decision in the case today, December 8, stated that the suit is not an abuse of court procedure, as the respondent’s lawyer argued.
As a result, she ordered that the phones and money taken from Sowore in August 2019 be restored to him, as well as N2 million in damages paid to him. She also ordered the DSS to publicly apologize to him in two national newspapers.
