Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command has arrested 1,077 suspects across various criminal activities and recovered ₦285 million from fraud-related cases in 2024.
The Command under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu, recorded a total of 1,426 reported cases and arrested 1,077 suspects for various offenses, including kidnapping, armed robbery, car theft, and fraud.
Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, in a statement made available to newsmen said the FCT, being Nigeria’s political and business hub, faced significant security challenges at the start of the year.
Adeh a Superintendent of Police also noted that strategic interventions, including robust community policing, intelligence-led operations and collaboration with sister agencies, have led to a 15.1% reduction in crime incidents compared to 2023.
She also disclosed that in the fight against kidnapping, 216 suspects were arrested, 68 victims rescued, and 38 suspects charged to court, resulting in 21 convictions.
According to her, efforts to combat armed robbery led to the arrest of 132 suspects, the recovery of ₦68.5 million, and 11 convictions.
She said 422 suspects were apprehended for fraud, with ₦285 million recovered and 58 convictions secured.
According to her, in cases of car theft, 64 suspects were arrested, 73 stolen vehicles were recovered, and 11 convictions were obtained.
In her words, the Command also recovered various items, including 376 firearms, among them 13 AK-47 magazines and 187 rounds of ammunition.
Adeh stated that Financial recoveries amounted to ₦409.9 million, which included ₦36.8 million from kidnapping suspects and ₦285 million from fraud cases, saying additionally, 73 stolen vehicles were retrieved, many of which were linked to car thefts, “one-chance” robberies, and cult-related activities.
She said the Command honoured the sacrifices of 140 police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, saying their dedication and service to ensuring the safety of FCT residents were acknowledged and deeply appreciated.
Adeh stated that the Command under CP Disu has unveiled strategic plans to intensify its fight against crime and further enhance the safety and security of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to her, the Command plans to intensify community policing engagements, intelligence-driven operations, and public sensitisation campaigns to address emerging security challenges.
