The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral AA Mustapha, has commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas (Admiralty Medal), for his commitment to infrastructural development in the Nigerian Navy, especially the improvement and maintenance of golf courses across commands.

Mustapha gave the commendation at the 9th FOC West Golf Tournament held at the Dolphin Golf Club, Navy Town, Lagos, which brought together serving and retired senior officers, golf enthusiasts and other guests.

He described the tournament as a success, pointing to the impressive turnout and quality of play, and expressed satisfaction with the development and maintenance of the Dolphin Golf Club course. He noted that similar upgrades have been carried out on golf facilities in other naval commands nationwide, reflecting the CNS’s focus on sports infrastructure.

The FOC highlighted the importance of golf beyond competition, saying it promotes physical fitness, social networking, mentorship and personal development, while providing a platform for interaction between serving and retired officers and inter-agency engagement.

Though not an avid golfer, Mustapha said he was determined to become a regular player given the benefits of the sport. He thanked serving and retired senior officers for their participation, mentorship and encouragement of aspiring golfers, stressing that their support remains vital to the growth of the game in the Navy.

The tournament ended with presentation of awards to outstanding golfers. Mustapha congratulated the male and female team captains and lauded winners for their performance and sportsmanship.
