The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for a five-year tenure from October 2026 to September 2031.
Dangut, a Nigerian, succeeds Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia and becomes the 14th Registrar of the Council. His appointment was ratified by Council at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026. He assumed office on October 1, 2026.
Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut earned a Bachelor of Agriculture (Animal Production) in 1991, MSc Animal Science in 1994, PhD Animal Science in 2017, and MEd Administration and Planning in 2020. He began his career at St. Louis College, Jos, in 1994 as an examiner for WAEC before joining the Council in 1998.
He has since served in various capacities including Assistant Registrar, Test Development Division, Lagos; Head of Examinations Security in Uyo and Bauchi; Branch Controller, Yola; Deputy Registrar/Controller, Post Examinations Department; Zonal Coordinator, Ikeja; and Head of National Office, Nigeria, from October 2023.
As HNO, he championed major innovations including Computer-Based WASSCE, serialization of question papers, digital e-marking system, digital certificate portal, WAEC E-Study platform, and systems for examination logistics and monitoring.
Described as an astute test developer and administrator, Dangut has leveraged ICT to improve test development, administration and post-test activities. He is a published scholar, Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria, member of the Nigerian Institute of Management, and Regional Representative of West Africa on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.
