Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has assured traders at Alaba International Market that the government will reconstruct roads and drainage in the market, with road work set to begin once drainage is completed.
Speaking on Friday at the unveiling of the New Face of International Market Electronics Association in Ikoyi, Hamzat said the administration is prioritizing flood control to ensure road infrastructure lasts. He noted that drainage construction behind the market is about 70% done.
“We must make sure that we move water… If we don’t do the drainage, there will be flooding. So, we must complete the drainage, and the moment we finish it, then the road is coming. We must also expand the road because of the increasing population,” he said. Hamzat added that government will continue to partner with market leaders to keep Alaba as a major hub for commerce in Lagos.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu commended the state for delivering projects that directly improve businesses, while President-General of Alaba International Market Electronics, Chief Camillus Amajuoyi, described the “New Face of Alaba” as a plan to reposition the market as a cleaner, safer and globally competitive hub.
Amajuoyi applauded government investment in urban renewal but urged urgent reconstruction of a motorable road within the market to ease movement of goods and reduce accidents.
