The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to reconstructing roads and drainage in Alaba International Market, with Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat assuring traders that road construction will begin once ongoing drainage projects are completed.
Speaking on Friday at the unveiling of the New Face of Alaba International Market Electronics Association in Ikoyi, Hamzat said prioritizing drainage is key to preventing flooding and protecting new road infrastructure. He noted that work on the drainage behind the market is about 70% complete.
“We must make sure that we move water… If we don’t do the drainage, there will be flooding. So, we must complete the drainage, and the moment we finish it, then the road is coming,” he said. The Deputy Governor also urged market leaders to provide land for a power station to boost electricity supply, adding that government will continue to invest in infrastructure that supports commerce and improves quality of life.
Market leaders welcomed the plan. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu commended the administration’s focus on projects that directly impact businesses, while President of Alaba International Market Electronics, Chief Camillus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, described the “New Face of Alaba” as a drive to make the market cleaner, safer, and globally competitive. He appealed to government to urgently reconstruct the Olojo Drive and Ojo-Igbede Road corridor, citing frequent accidents, loss of lives and disruptions caused by its poor state.
