The Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship BEEECROFT, Commodore K.O Oguntuga has released details of the latest activities of the command around the Apapa coastal area in Lagos.
Speaking at a press briefing at the commands’ headquarters, he said that the patrol team from the command made a significant bust on some illegal oil bunkering activities. According to Commodore Oguntuga, these unscrupulous elements were in the process of moving refined petroleum products around the waterways and most likely, to be taken across Nigerian waters into Neighbouring Countries for sale.
He decried the spate of these illegal bunkering activities because as he said, it is robbing the nation and the citizens of economic revenue and access to these products.
He said that it not only poses economic loss but dangers due to the handling of the products with no adequate safety measures. Commodore said that despite the economic hardship being faced by Nigerians, bunkering is not the best option to make money as lives and property which are precious could be endangered.
Concluding, Commodore Oguntuga said that under the leadership of the Chief Of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, the continuous strive for maritime safety and preparedness for defending the nation’s assets especially on Nigerian waters, would be carried out effectively.
