Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested 135 suspected cultists in simultaneous raids across identified criminal hideouts and black spots in the state. The operation, carried out on the directive of Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, and based on credible intelligence, involved Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders, and the Violent Crime Response Unit. It was aimed at preventing cult-related violence linked to the 7/7 celebration and initiation.
The raids led to the recovery of 26 firearms, 16 other dangerous weapons including cutlasses, battle axes, daggers and knives, as well as cult insignia, assorted charms, 11 bottles of assorted alcoholic drinks, substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other illicit drugs, and six mobile phones. Police said the operation followed intelligence indicating plans by rival cult groups to launch attacks and engage in other criminal activities across the state.
The Command said investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the gangs, while the arrested suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations. CP Fatai reiterated the Command’s commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations to keep Lagos safe and prevent breakdown of law and order.
