The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has organised a refresher course for its Canine Unit in Lagos in partnership with the German Federal Criminal Police (BKA).
Facilitated by German technical experts, Mr. Andreas Roscher and Ms. Jacqueline Shüler, the training brought together 11 personnel — the Unit Commander, two veterinary doctors and eight dog handlers with their service dogs — plus five officers aspiring to join the Unit.
The sessions focused on advanced obedience, scent imprinting, narcotics search patterns, and practical simulations at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport baggage hall, NAHCO export shed and APM Terminals, Apapa, as well as safety tactics for high-risk deployments.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), said the exercise demonstrates the Agency’s resolve to equip its workforce to counter sophisticated drug networks, describing canine teams as critical to seizures at airports, seaports and borders. He assured that challenges around personnel, kennels and more service dogs will be addressed, with plans to make the refresher training annual.
