The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced that it is taking steps to make its exams mandatory in all states across the country.
Mr Azeez Sani, the council’s Head of Information and Public Relations Division, expressed hope that other states would follow the Cross River Government’s lead, which approved making all NECO public examinations compulsory for all public schools in the state.
The National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE), the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), and the Senior School Certificate Examination are all administered by the council (SSCE).

Sani said the approval came after the Registrar/Chief Executive of NECO, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, made a request to the Cross River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade, during a courtesy visit to the governor in Calabar.
The governor is said to have expressed satisfaction with Cross River indigenes’ performance in the NECO SSCE over the last five years.
Wushishi had previously praised the state government for its favorable attitude toward the council.
He explained that NECO, as the country’s only national indigenous examination body, deserved all Nigerians’ support.
