Residents of Ward F2 in Surulere, Lagos, now have access to clean water following the commissioning of a Nigerian Navy-funded project in Aralile, Hogan Bassey and Oyerokun communities. The intervention, delivered under the Chief of the Naval Staff Special Intervention Quick Impact Project Scheme, includes three solar-powered boreholes, three 12,000-litre storage tanks, steel stands and filtration units. The Navy said the project is designed to improve sanitation, public health and quality of life, while also strengthening military-civilian relations through targeted infrastructure.
Representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Chief of Naval Transformation and Innovation, Rear Admiral Chijioke Onyemaobi, said the initiative followed a needs assessment and reflects the Navy’s commitment to socio-economic development. He credited project facilitator, Rear Admiral AO Ogunleye, Chief of Defence Training, for identifying the need and applauded community leaders for their cooperation. Rear Admiral Ogunleye described the project as both a community responsibility and part of the Navy’s contribution to national development and security, and urged residents to protect the facilities and ensure regular maintenance for sustainability.
Surulere Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf, welcomed the project and commended the Chief of the Naval Staff for siting it in Ward F2. He also acknowledged Rear Admiral Ogunleye’s role in bringing the intervention to the area, calling it a model other institutions can emulate. With its solar-powered design, the new water infrastructure is expected to provide a more reliable supply for residents, support better hygiene practices, and reduce challenges linked to power supply.
