Detectives of the Oke Itoku Division, Ogun State Police Command, have begun a full-scale investigation into a suspected cult-related clash that left one man dead in Abeokuta on Sunday, 3 May 2026. The violent confrontation reportedly broke out around 2:45 p.m. between suspected rival cult groups along Wasimi Ake Road, specifically between Centenary Hall and Lotus Bank leading toward the Ijemo Agbadu axis. The Command clarified that the incident did not occur at Ake Palace and was not connected to the Yayi Progressive Movement inauguration held there, stressing that the clash was confined to the roadway and adjoining neighbourhood.
Preliminary findings indicate that gunshots triggered panic as the hoodlums engaged one another before fleeing on foot toward adjoining streets. Police operatives responded promptly to distress calls and, on arrival, found one victim identified simply as “Stone” in a pool of blood with critical gunshot injuries. He was evacuated with the State Ambulance Service to State Hospital, Ijaiye, where he was confirmed dead. The corpse has been deposited at the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
The Command said an intensified manhunt has been launched for the perpetrators, with adequate security presence now in place to prevent recurrence. Normalcy has been restored in the area.
