It was Plato who argued that the perfect ruler must be a “Philosopher King.” This quality demands that candidates not merely hold power but truly understand the nature of reality, justice, the internal strength and character to stand up for ethical principles, and truth.
Every community desires a Philosopher King, with qualities which extend far beyond the wearing of the crown. He must distinguish true justice from mere opportunism, have a unique blend of moral virtue, intellectual supremacy, a deep sense of justice, self-discipline, and moral fortitude to justify his rule.
The construct of the ideal candidate for a royal throne bridges political and cultural philosophy, ethics, and arguably metaphysics. The candidate must be a person who will rule out of a sense of duty to the community, never for personal gain.
Aristotle emphasised that a candidate for the throne must be the ultimate embodiment of virtue, as a ruler’s private character directly dictates his public policy. He must believe in the unwavering commitment to give every citizen their rightful due, possess the practical wisdom to make correct decisions in complex, unpredictable situations, have total mastery over personal passions, greed, and anger, and moral courage to defend the community.
According to Laozi’s Dao De Jing, the ideal ruler operates with such perfect alignment with the natural order that his leadership feels invisible. The ruler guides the kingdom without forcing their personal will upon the people. He places himself below the people to lift them, acting like water that nourishes everything without competing. The candidate must be a person who will selflessly serve the community, and by conquering his own desires, ensures the community naturally finds peace and balance.
Therefore, a candidate for true rulership must be defined by an unwavering commitment to justice, ethics, visionary foresight, deep empathy, and a profound sense of duty, not self-aggrandisement.
When these traits converge, the candidate becomes a timeless symbol of stability, unity, discipline, and progress for the community.
