The West African Examinations Council (Waec) has announced guidelines and modalities for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for school candidates in Nigeria scheduled to start tomorrow.
This announcement was made known to the press on behalf of the Registrar of the Council to all stakeholders, partners and candidates as part of its’ preparedness in hosting the annual examination in Nigeria.
Speaking, Head Of National Office (Nigeria), Dr.Amos Josiah Dangut, said the West African Examination Council (WAEC), as Africa’s foremost examination body, maintains its global reputation, particularly in utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance service delivery for Nigerian students. He said this in reference to the recently conducted WASSCE for private candidates using a Computer-based model.
He also said that the examination is scheduled to run from Tuesday, April 30 to Monday, June 24, 2024, spanning seven (07) weeks and six (06) days in Nigeria and three other WAEC member countries.
A total of 1,814,344 candidates from 22,229 schools have registered for the examination, with a notable increase in both male and female candidates compared to previous years.
Speaking further, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, spoke on the Federal Government’s directive on the use of the National Identification Number (NIN), which was integrated into the registration process, ensuring compliance with regulations.
Recognizing the prevalent insecurity in the country, the Head Of National Office, said that the West African Examination Body is collaborating with relevant authorities to ensure the examination’s nationwide conduct in a safe environment.
Dr. Dangut, Head Of National office, said WAEC remains vigilant against examination malpractice, implementing stringent penalties and conducting extensive awareness campaigns to deter such actions.
He cautioned against patronizing rogue websites, emphasizing the importance of accessing legitimate examination resources.
He spoke largely on WAEC’s introduction to past question papers with marking schemes to aid candidates’ preparation, along with e-learning portals and the WAEC Konnect platform for interactive learning.
Results will be released 45 days after the last paper, with certificates issued digitally for quicker access.
Despite challenges such as registration deadline extensions, WAEC continues to innovate and improve service delivery through initiatives like the EDUSTAT platform and the WAEC Verify service.
He concluded by saying that, WAEC remains committed to delivering credible examinations, supported by collaboration with key stakeholders. We appreciate the ongoing support from government bodies, security agencies, and the media in ensuring the success of WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024.
