Headquarters 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke has debunked misleading social media reports on the death of Lt. Col. Emmanuel Gabriel Okoye, Commanding Officer of 20 Model Battalion. The Brigade said Okoye died on 13 June 2026 after a brief illness, and his death was not caused by a bandit attack or any operational incident as falsely claimed online. It stressed that the circumstances of his passing are clear and have been communicated through official channels.
The Nigerian Army described the spread of unverified information and speculation as misleading and insensitive to the officer’s family and the military. It warned that false narratives can cause unnecessary anxiety among troops, their families, and the public. The Brigade regretted that some individuals and platforms chose to speculate on the death of a distinguished officer without recourse to verified facts or official sources.
6 Brigade urged the public and media practitioners to disregard the false reports and avoid sharing unsubstantiated claims that undermine public confidence and disrespect the deceased. It reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and professionalism in information dissemination, and encouraged people to seek clarification through official military channels. The Army said Lt. Col. Okoye served with dedication, honour and professionalism, and continues to mourn his passing while praying for the repose of his soul.
