Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has called on privileged Nigerians to provide support for the families of fallen heroes. This is essential in view of the sacrifice they made in the discharge of their responsibilities.
Speaking today at the Y2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Parade and Wreath Laying Ceremony held at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, Sanwo-Olu said the call becomes imperative to ensure that the sacrifices of these heroes are honoured and their loved ones cared for.
The Governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat emphasized that the annual event goes beyond the parade, serving as a rallying cry for Nigerians to support the families of fallen heroes. The support is crucial in helping them fulfill their responsibilities and sustain them. It is also an appeal to cater to the needs of families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.
According to him, “Every year we do this in honour of our fallen heroes. We all know they sacrifice their lives so that we can stay in peace. In essence, the process is for Nigerians to contribute to the needs of those they left behind. Besides it is not too much if the privileged ones among us take care of the children they left behind. This remembrance day is not just about the parade it is about that process and we just hope that Nigerians can always help to sustain our fallen heroes.”
While reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting living heroes, he highlighted that the Legion (the veterans) is a key component of the support. “We collaborate with them throughout the year in various ways, and through their various agencies and even create employment opportunities for them. There are so many things that we are doing, and of course every year we want to get better by listening to them and ensure that we help in sustaining their families,” the Governor concluded.
Highlights of the event include; Offering of Prayers, Laying of Wreaths, Parade, Release of Pigeons and Balloons, among others.
