ASABA — The Delta State Police Command says it has put security measures in place for the 2026 Annual New Yam Festival of Onicha-Olona Community, billed for 13th to 26th September 2026. Commissioner of Police, CP Samue has directed the deployment of officers to the festival venue, key entry and exit points, flashpoints, and other strategic areas within the community. Patrol and traffic units have also been mobilized to manage adjoining routes, control vehicle movement, and ensure quick response to any incidents during the festivities.
The CP warned that the Command will not tolerate acts of violence, cultism, brawls, possession or use of firearms and other dangerous weapons, harassment, or any conduct likely to breach public peace. He cautioned against using the cultural event to settle personal scores, carry out reprisals, or commit criminal acts, adding that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted. Residents and visitors were urged to celebrate peacefully and cooperate with police personnel on duty.
CP Erale further advised parents and guardians to keep watch over their children and wards, while motorists were urged to drive responsibly and obey traffic instructions. He called on the public to avoid confrontations and jungle justice, and to report any suspicious persons or disturbances promptly. The Commissioner assured the people of Onicha-Olona and visitors of a safe celebration, and appealed to traditional rulers, youth leaders and other stakeholders to support the police.
